How to get your ChatGPT export

  1. In ChatGPT on the web, open your profile menu → Settings → Data controls → Export data. Select Export, then Confirm export.
  2. Download the ZIP from the message OpenAI sends when it is ready. OpenAI says exports can take up to 7 days, and the download link expires after 24 hours. Export availability depends on your account and workspace.
  3. Choose that ZIP above. Or extract it on your computer and select conversations.json, or all the numbered conversations-000.json parts together.

The ZIP contains chat history and other account data. Export examples shared in OpenAI’s community include chat.html, conversation JSON, and associated files. Tools updated in 2026 document numbered JSON parts and mappings with parent pointers only. This reader opens only conversation JSON. It does not load images, attachments or chat.html.

How do I open conversations.json?

Choose your ChatGPT export ZIP or conversations.json above. If your export has numbered conversations-000.json parts, choose the ZIP or select all the JSON parts together.

Is my ChatGPT export uploaded anywhere?

No. The viewer reads your file in a Web Worker in your browser. It has no analytics, upload endpoint, or external libraries. Files and chat text are held in memory, not saved to browser storage. Clear the viewer or close the tab to release them.

Can I convert conversations.json to Markdown?

Yes. Open a chat, then choose Copy as Markdown or Download .md. The export contains the selected branch’s visible user and assistant text, with role headings. Images, attachments, tool messages, hidden reasoning and alternative branches are not included.

Why are some chats or messages missing?

The viewer can only show data present in your export. Load all numbered parts. It shows the branch selected by current_node, and reports missing or broken branch pointers instead of guessing. Archive and Project filters only use fields present in the file. It cannot restore deleted chats or fetch missing attachments.

Can I open a large export?

Parsing, ZIP extraction and search run in a Web Worker, and the list shows 100 chats at a time. The safety limits are 512 MiB per JSON file and 1 GiB of JSON per import. Browser memory can impose a lower limit. For a very large archive, extract it and select fewer numbered JSON parts at a time.
