ChatGPT archive vs delete: what actually happens
Updated 5 November 2026
Both buttons make a chat disappear from your sidebar, so they look alike. They're not. Archive is a drawer: the chat is out of sight but still there. Delete is the bin, and the bin gets emptied.
Side by side
| Archive | Delete | |
|---|---|---|
| Shows in the sidebar | No | No |
| Can you get it back? | Yes, any time | No. Not you, not support |
| Still in your account | Yes | No |
| OpenAI's copy | Kept, like any chat | Removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, apart from security and legal exceptions |
| Can ChatGPT draw on it later? | It can, if "Reference chat history" is on | No |
| Good for | A tidy sidebar | Things you never want to see again |
What archiving does
Hover over a chat, open the ⋯ menu and choose Archive. The chat leaves the sidebar but stays in your account. To see or restore archived chats, go to your profile picture › Settings › Data controls › Archived chats, then unarchive the ones you want back.
Archiving is about tidiness, not privacy. The conversation is still stored, and it can still inform ChatGPT's answers if you use its chat-history memory (more on that below).
What deleting does
Choose Delete from the same menu. The chat vanishes from your account at once. According to OpenAI's help centre, deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless the data was already de-identified or has to be kept for security or legal reasons. There is no undo and support can't restore it.
The memory part people miss
ChatGPT has two kinds of memory, and neither is the same as your chat list:
- Saved memories are facts ChatGPT has noted about you ("prefers metric units"). They live separately. Deleting a chat does not delete a memory that came from it. Manage them under Settings › Personalization › Memory.
- Reference chat history lets ChatGPT draw on your past conversations. OpenAI says that if you turn it off, what it remembered from past chats is deleted within 30 days, but the chats themselves stay until you delete them.
So if you want ChatGPT to truly forget something, delete the chat (archiving isn't enough), and also delete any saved memory about it.
Doing it for many chats at once
Settings › Data controls has Archive all chats and Delete all chats. They're all-or-nothing: "Delete all" also removes archived chats and chats inside Projects. There's no built-in way to archive or delete a hand-picked set.
Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension that lists your chats with checkboxes so you can archive or delete just the ones you pick. No limits, no sign-in, runs only in your browser.
A sensible routine: archive in bulk first, live with it for a week, then delete what you didn't miss. More detail in how to delete multiple ChatGPT chats at once.
FAQ
Do archived chats still show up in ChatGPT's search?
Archived chats are still in your account, so expect them to be findable. If you don't want a chat to turn up anywhere, delete it.
Does archiving free up space or make ChatGPT faster?
There's no storage quota for chats, so there's no space to free. A shorter sidebar loads a little quicker, and that's about it.
If I delete my account, are archived chats deleted too?
Yes. Deleting your account removes all your chats, archived or not.
Should I export before deleting?
If there's any chance you'll want something later, yes: Settings › Data controls › Export data emails you a copy of everything.
