ChatGPT won't delete a chat (or it comes back)

Updated 5 November 2026

You click ⋯ › Delete, confirm, and nothing happens. Or the chat vanishes, then it's back after a reload, or still there on your phone. OpenAI's forum has had a steady run of these reports since March 2025, and the replies show that "delete not working" is several different problems. Here's how to tell them apart.

First, reload: is it really still there?

The sidebar is a copy of your chat list kept in the page. When you delete, it drops the chat at once and the server does its part in the background, so the list can be wrong in both directions: a chat still in your account though it's gone from the list, or one lingering in a stale list after the server removed it.

Reload the page, then open search (the magnifying glass in the sidebar, or Ctrl K / Cmd K) and look for the title. OpenAI's help centre says deleting a chat also removes it from the search index, so search is the honest answer. If you have the phone app, check there too. When a user reported deleted chats coming back on Android in November 2026, OpenAI Support's first step was exactly this: delete a test chat on one device, refresh the other, see where it reappears.

Cause 1: you deleted too many too fast

Each delete is a request to ChatGPT's servers, and the sidebar refreshes itself afterwards; a forum user who traced the traffic in August 2026 counted about six requests per delete. Do a dozen in a row and ChatGPT can answer "You're making requests too quickly. We've temporarily limited access to your conversations to protect your data." While that lasts, deletes fail and the sidebar may go blank.

Wait a few minutes with one ChatGPT tab open and no reloading, then reload once. The deletes before the block usually went through; the ones after it didn't. Carry on with a few seconds between deletes.

Cause 2: archived chats that refuse to delete

This is the one no amount of cache-clearing fixes. In July 2026 a ChatGPT Edu user watched the network tab while deleting an archived chat from Settings › Data controls › Archived chats: the delete request ran for about 30 seconds and came back with a server error, "Request timeout", every time, while archiving the same chat took under a second. Retrying, clearing cookies, signing out, the mobile app: no difference. The same month another user got "Delete failed" on a set of old archived chats that had also stopped loading, and the November 2026 Android user was told by OpenAI Support that the delete had reached the server and timed out after 30 seconds.

The common thread is a chat record in a bad state on OpenAI's side, often an old or very long archived chat. OpenAI Support said in May 2026 that very old archived chats may not load reliably and that the data export is the best way to recover their content; for a chat that wouldn't delete, their advice was to leave it alone until a fix rolled out. In both July threads Support later said the problem had been resolved. If you still see it, go to contacting OpenAI: that is the only route that works.

Two workarounds people have tried: in March 2025, archiving the chat and deleting it from Archived chats worked for some and not others; and the July 2026 user got rid of the stuck chat by moving the other chats out of its Project and deleting the Project, though deleting the chat directly still failed.

Cause 3: chats inside Projects

A chat you've moved into a Project is listed under that Project in the sidebar, and may or may not also show among recent chats depending on the Organize chats setting. Moving chats into Projects has been reported to make them vanish from the sidebar while search still finds them (August 2025, again in September 2026), so a Project chat that "won't delete" may simply not be where you're looking. Open the Project, or search for the title, and delete it from there. The other way round, "Delete all chats" does include Project chats: OpenAI's help centre says it applies to all conversations, including those in Projects.

Cause 4: wrong account or workspace

If you use ChatGPT through work or school, your account has a personal workspace and a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, each with its own chats. OpenAI's help centre says the personal data stays separate and you switch between them from the profile menu. Deleting in one doesn't touch the other. The same goes for two separate accounts, if you ever signed up twice. Check the email and workspace name under your profile picture before deciding a delete has failed.

Delete many without the guesswork

By hand, a failed delete is silent: the chat is just still there, and you can't tell whether it was the rate limit, a stuck record or a stale sidebar. ChatGPT's own bulk option, Settings › Data controls › Delete all chats, is one request, so no rate limit, but it takes everything, archived and Project chats included, with no undo.

Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension that lists your chats with checkboxes so you can delete or archive just the ones you pick. It sends the same delete request the ChatGPT site sends. If ChatGPT answers "too many requests" or a server error, it waits and retries that chat a few times; whatever still fails is counted, "Deleted 40 chats, 2 failed", and gets a Retry button. The failed chats stay in the list and stay ticked, so you can see which ones they are. No limits, no sign-in, runs only in your browser.

It can't delete a chat the server refuses to delete; nothing on your side can. What changes is that you find out which chats those are. One that fails every retry is the one to send to OpenAI.

When to contact OpenAI (what to include)

Contact them when a chat survives a reload and a delete on a second device, and it isn't a workspace mix-up. Use the chat bubble at help.openai.com or email support@openai.com, the two routes OpenAI Support gives in the forum. Check status.openai.com first: in late November 2025 it carried an incident titled "ChatGPT users on web are unable to delete conversations" while the forum filled with reports. If there's an open incident, waiting is the fix.

Include what Support has asked others for:

What Support can't do is restore a chat that did delete. OpenAI's help centre says deleted chats can't be restored by you or by Support, and they're removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days.

FAQ

Why does a deleted ChatGPT chat come back?

Because the delete never reached ChatGPT's servers, or the server failed to carry it out. The sidebar removes the chat at once, so it looks deleted until the list reloads from the server. If it's back after a reload and on another device, the chat is still in your account.

Does archiving a chat and then deleting it from Archived chats work?

Sometimes. In March 2025 several forum users reported that archiving a stuck chat and deleting it from Settings › Data controls › Archived chats worked when the sidebar's Delete did nothing. Others said it didn't help, and for archived chats that return a server error on delete it makes no difference.

Can OpenAI Support delete a chat for me?

They can look into it. In the forum, OpenAI Support asks people with a chat that won't delete to open a case through help.openai.com or support@openai.com, and in two July 2026 threads said the deletion problem had been fixed on their side. Support can't restore a chat once it's deleted.

Does Delete all chats work when single deletes fail?

It's a different, single request, so it can succeed where one chat is stuck, but it removes every chat in the account or workspace, including archived chats and chats inside Projects, and there's no undo. Export your data first (Settings › Data controls › Export data).
