ChatGPT data export: how long it takes, why the email never comes, and what's in the zip
Updated 5 November 2026
You clicked Export data, ChatGPT said an email was on its way, and nothing came. Or it came days later, and the zip is a gigabyte with an HTML file that crashes the browser. Here's what OpenAI says about timing, what people actually report, what stops the email, which files are in the zip, and how to read them without writing code.
How to request it
- On chatgpt.com, profile picture › Settings › Data controls. Next to Export data, click Export, then Confirm export. A green notice says you should receive an email shortly.
- Watch the inbox of the email address on the account, including spam and promotions. OpenAI's help article names the sender as noreply@tm.openai.com; accounts that sign in with a phone number get the link by text instead.
- Open the link within 24 hours, in a browser where you're signed in to the account that made the request, and download the zip.
- Before deleting anything, open the zip in a viewer (below) and check the chats are all there.
OpenAI's help article lists the export for Free, Plus and Pro, with Go added in the newest version; Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces have no self-service export, so ask the workspace admin. The second route is the Privacy Portal at privacy.openai.com: Make a Privacy Request › I have a consumer ChatGPT account › Download my data, verified through the account's email or phone. OpenAI Support said in April 2026 that the portal doesn't cover business accounts.
One caveat: OpenAI's help pages block automated fetches, so quotes from the help article here come from search-engine excerpts of an article that has changed several times this year.
How long it really takes
OpenAI's line is "exports can take up to 7 days", with an email or SMS when the file is ready and a link that expires 24 hours after you receive it. The forum shows the whole range.
| Reported | Wait |
|---|---|
| December 2024, after a weeks-long outage cleared | 2 minutes |
| March 2025, "my data is small" | About 10 minutes |
| July 2024 | Sometimes at once, sometimes over 4 hours |
| September 2026, a large account | 3 to 4 days; the same person's previous export took about 5 |
| January to October 2026, several threads | Never: the confirmation arrives, the download email doesn't |
The pattern, which OpenAI hasn't confirmed, is that small accounts get the email within the hour and accounts with years of chats and images wait days. Past day seven, you're in the next section.
No email? What stops it
- The wrong inbox. The email goes to the address on the ChatGPT account, which may not be the one you're watching if you signed in with Google or Apple. Phone-only accounts get a text.
- It hasn't been seven days. OpenAI Support, September 2026: "Exports can take up to 7 days, and it's best to wait for the current request before starting another."
- Requesting again. A search-engine excerpt of OpenAI's help article says only the most recent request is fulfilled and earlier ones are cancelled. I couldn't load the article to confirm that wording, so treat it as unverified; either way, one request, then wait.
- An old sign-in. In July 2026 OpenAI Support suggested signing in again on the web and retrying at once, which "has sometimes worked because of the recent login window timeframe".
- The link says
{"detail":"Not found."}. You opened it while signed in to a different account than the one that requested it, usually the app on one login and the browser on another. Users fixed it in October 2025, January 2026 and February 2026 by signing in to the requesting account on the web and clicking again. - The download stops partway, or the zip won't open. A large-export problem: failures at 200 MB and 500 MB in 2025, unextractable 2 GB downloads in June 2026, zips of up to 3 GB with no end-of-archive record in October 2026. OpenAI Support (September 2026): open the link signed in to the same account, within 24 hours; if it still stops, contact Support privately with the error and the time. Another browser or device sometimes works.
- Still nothing after seven days. Contact Support through help.openai.com, or use the Privacy Portal. Be ready for a wait: an October 2026 post describes a Privacy Team case open for weeks, and in July 2026 Support had no record of four requests a user made from Settings in one day.
The files in the zip
OpenAI's help article only says the zip holds your chat history and other account data. From exports people have described in 2026:
- chat.html. One web page with every conversation, meant for reading. The next section covers why it often doesn't open.
- conversations.json, or numbered parts conversations-000.json, conversations-001.json and so on for bigger accounts. Every chat as a tree of messages: each edit or regenerate makes a branch,
current_nodemarks the one you last saw, and times are Unix timestamps. A February 2026 export shared on GitHub also carriesis_archivedandgizmo_idon each chat. - Attachment files named by file ID,
.datfiles in a September 2026 example. Earlier exports had adalle-generationsfolder and audio folders; a March 2025 thread complained the layout changes without documentation, so expect yours to differ. - library-files.json, a list of the Library's files, reported in August 2026.
Older write-ups also list user.json, message_feedback.json, model_comparisons.json and shared_conversations.json; I haven't seen a 2026 export confirm them.
Images are the weak spot. A thread from May 2025 reported generated images disappearing from exports, returning after a retry, then disappearing again. In August 2026 a user who counted found 97 of 788 Library files and 132 of 1,688 chat attachments missing from the zip, and a fresh export through the Privacy Portal lacked the same files. OpenAI Support asked them to request again, then in October 2026 to check whether the files still open in the Library; no cause has been given. If an image matters, save it from the Library yourself.
Read it without code
chat.html is the file OpenAI means you to open, and for a big account it doesn't. A Forbes reviewer in March 2026 got a zip of just over 1 GB, nearly 1.5 GB unpacked, and chat.html crashed both Safari and Vivaldi; another user got a blank page. conversations.json is worse by hand: hundreds of megabytes of nested JSON, with messages linked by IDs rather than in order.
Disclosure: I made this viewer and Bulk Delete Chats. The ChatGPT export viewer is a free page that opens the zip, or conversations.json and its numbered parts, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and there's no analytics or sign-in. It lists every chat with its created and last-updated dates, sorts and filters by date or title, searches titles or message text, and shows Archive status and Project filters when the file carries those fields. Open a chat to read it, copy it as Markdown or download a .md file, and download the chat list as a CSV.
It shows the visible text of the branch you last saw in each chat; images, attachments, tool calls and alternative branches aren't included. Limits are 512 MiB per JSON file and 1 GiB per import, with browser memory the real ceiling; for a huge archive, unzip it and load fewer numbered parts at a time. Count the chats against your sidebar while you're there: an August 2026 report found the export itself missing the later messages of a long chat.
Moving chats to another assistant
I won't vouch for any import feature for a ChatGPT zip, and the JSON isn't something you'd paste. What works is text: open a chat in the viewer, Copy as Markdown, and paste it into a new conversation with Claude, Gemini or whichever assistant you're moving to, with a line saying it's a past conversation to continue from. Markdown keeps the headings, code blocks and who said what. For a dozen chats, download them as .md files into a folder you can search. For a PDF, paste the Markdown into a document and export it, or open the chat on chatgpt.com and print to PDF.
Then clean up
With the zip downloaded and checked, your chats are backed up as of the moment you requested the export; anything after that isn't in it. Delete all chats in Data controls is the clean-slate option; it takes archived and Project chats too and can't be undone. To remove most and keep some, how to delete multiple ChatGPT chats at once goes through the options, including the Bulk Delete Chats extension, which lists your chats with checkboxes on chatgpt.com.
FAQ
Does requesting the export twice cancel the first request?
Not confirmed. A search-engine excerpt of OpenAI's help article says only the most recent request is fulfilled and earlier ones are cancelled, but the article itself couldn't be loaded to check the wording. What is on record is OpenAI Support's advice from September 2026: wait for the current request before starting another. Request once and wait the full seven days.
How long is the download link valid?
OpenAI's help article says the link expires 24 hours after you receive it, and Support asks you to open it while signed in to the account that made the request. If it has expired, request a new export from Settings or the Privacy Portal; there's no way to revive the old link.
Are images included in the export?
Sometimes, and not reliably. Exports in 2025 and 2026 have shipped image and attachment files named by file ID, but forum reports since May 2025 describe generated images missing, and an August 2026 count found 97 of 788 Library files and 132 of 1,688 conversation attachments absent from the zip. OpenAI hasn't explained it. Save anything important from the Library before you rely on the export.
Does the export include archived chats and Project chats?
Probably, but OpenAI doesn't say. A February 2026 export shared on GitHub has an is_archived flag and a gizmo_id field on every chat, which is how archived chats and Project chats would be marked. Project names aren't in the file. Open the export in the viewer: if the file carries those fields, an Archive status filter and a Project filter appear and you can see for yourself.
Why is chat.html too big to open?
It's one web page containing every chat you've ever had. A reviewer in March 2026 got a zip of just over 1 GB that crashed Safari and Vivaldi; another user saw only a blank page in Safari. Skip it and open conversations.json, or the numbered conversations-000.json parts, in a viewer that loads one chat at a time.
