Does having too many ChatGPT chats slow it down?

Updated 5 November 2026

ChatGPT starts to crawl: typing lags, a reply takes a minute to appear, the tab freezes. The sidebar has hundreds of chats in it, so deleting them looks like the obvious fix. Usually it isn't. Here's what is actually slow, a two-minute way to check, and the fixes that work.

What slows ChatGPT down: one long chat, or many chats?

Two different things get blamed for the same symptom.

So if the slowness is inside a conversation, the number of chats you have is almost certainly not the cause. If the slowness is the sidebar taking ages to show old chats, or throwing "too many requests", the size of the list is the cause.

Test it in two minutes

  1. Open a new chat and send a one-line message. If the reply comes back quickly, your account and your chat count are fine. The slow chat is slow because of its length.
  2. Copy the slow chat's address and open it in a different browser, or in a private window with extensions turned off. One forum user reports the same chat loading at once in a second browser after minutes of waiting in the first. If that helps, see the browser-side fixes below.
  3. Scroll the sidebar all the way down. If that is what stalls, or what shows "too many requests", the list is the problem and thinning it out will help.

Fix 1: start a new chat with a summary

This is the fix nobody wants, because it feels like losing the thread. It is also the one that works. Keep the context, drop the weight.

  1. In the slow chat, ask ChatGPT for a handover note: what you're working on, the decisions made so far, the constraints, and what comes next, written so a new chat can continue without the history.
  2. Read it and correct anything wrong or missing. This is the only context the new chat will have.
  3. Open a new chat, paste the note as the first message, and carry on from there. Keep the old chat; you can still look things up in it.

If the chat is enormous, some people also save it as a document and upload that to the new chat along with the summary. If you use saved memories or "Reference chat history" (Settings › Personalization › Memory), the new chat already carries some of your context too.

Fix 2: thin out the sidebar

This helps when the list is the problem: old chats slow to load, scrolling that trips the "too many requests" limit. It won't speed up a long conversation, so do Fix 1 for that.

ChatGPT's own options are all-or-nothing: Settings › Data controls › Archive all chats or Delete all chats. Deleting chats one at a time from the ⋯ menu works for a handful; do it quickly for dozens and you'll hit the same "too many requests" block, so leave a few seconds between deletes.

Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension for the in-between case. It lists every chat with its last-updated date, you search or shift-click to tick the ones you don't need, then archive or delete them in one go. If ChatGPT asks it to slow down, it waits and retries; anything that still fails gets a Retry button. No limits, no sign-in, runs only in your browser.

Archive if there's any chance you'll want the chats again. For the sidebar it makes no difference: archived and deleted chats both leave the list. The full comparison is in ChatGPT archive vs delete, and the options for clearing many chats are in how to delete multiple ChatGPT chats at once.

Fix 3: browser-side fixes

These are what people in the forum and OpenAI Support suggest for a sluggish or stalling page. They treat the symptom; the conversation is still long.

What doesn't help

FAQ

Does deleting chats free up memory?

No. ChatGPT has no storage quota for chats, so there is nothing to free. A chat only uses your browser's memory while it is open on screen, and deleting other chats doesn't change the one you're in.

Does archiving help as much as deleting?

For the sidebar, yes. Archived chats leave the list just like deleted ones, so loading and scrolling behave the same. Archiving keeps the chats, and you can restore them from Settings › Data controls › Archived chats. Delete only the ones you never want back.

Why is ChatGPT slow in Chrome but fine in the app?

The slowdowns people report are the web page rendering one very long conversation. If the same chat is fine in the app, your account and the chat itself are fine; the problem is the page in that browser. Try the browser-side fixes, or carry on in the app and start a new chat when you can.
