How to clean up your ChatGPT history

Updated 5 November 2026

ChatGPT keeps more than the list in the sidebar: archived chats, saved memories, links you've shared. Here's a routine that tidies all of it in about ten minutes, in an order that never loses something you wanted.

1. Export first (one minute, then wait)

Settings › Data controls › Export data. ChatGPT emails you a download link with every chat. Do this before deleting anything; it's your undo button.

2. Keep what matters

Skim the sidebar for chats you'll come back to. Rename them so they're easy to find later ("Kitchen quote: chose B because…"), or move them into a Project. Anything worth keeping should have a clear title before step 3.

3. Clear the rest

Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension that lists your chats with checkboxes so you can delete or archive just the ones you tick. No limits, no account, runs in your browser. Not affiliated with OpenAI.

4. Check what ChatGPT remembers

Deleting chats doesn't delete saved memories. Go to Settings › Personalization › Memory and open the list. Delete anything outdated or that you'd rather it forgot. If you'd rather it didn't draw on past chats at all, turn off Reference chat history on the same page.

5. Revoke old shared links

If you've ever shared a chat by link, that page is visible to anyone who has the link. Settings › Data controls › Shared links lists them; delete the ones you no longer need.

6. Make it easier next time

FAQ

Can I undo a delete?

No. That's why the export comes first, and why archiving is the safer choice when you're unsure.

Do archived chats still count?

They're still stored in your account and can still be found. Archiving tidies; deleting removes. More in ChatGPT archive vs delete.

Does this work on the phone app?

The Settings steps do. Selecting many chats at once only works on the web.
