ChatGPT chats disappeared? Check these five places first

Updated 5 November 2026

You open ChatGPT and the sidebar is thinner than it should be: last week's chats are gone, or the pinned ones, or everything older than a month. Before you assume they're deleted, run through these five checks in order. In most forum threads about missing chats, the chats were still there; the sidebar's view of them wasn't.

Not deleted, just hidden (the usual case)

The sidebar is one view of your account, and a fragile one: it loads chats in batches, hides archived chats, and has had a run of display bugs in 2026. Deletion is final and immediate: OpenAI's help centre says a deleted chat leaves your account view at once and drops out of search. So the real question is "are they still in the account?", and search answers that in ten seconds, with the two exceptions noted under step 5. The five places, in order:

1. Archived

Archiving removes a chat from the sidebar and keeps it in your account. It's easy to do by accident: it sits next to Delete in the ⋯ menu, and Settings › Data controls has an Archive all chats button one click from Delete all chats. Look under profile picture › Settings › Data controls › Archived chats; anything there can be unarchived. Archived chats also show in search, so a chat that search finds but the sidebar doesn't is probably here.

2. Temporary chat

A Temporary chat is never meant to be in your history. OpenAI's FAQ says you start one from the pill-shaped Temporary button at the top right of a new chat, that it doesn't appear in your history, and that once you leave it without saving you can't reopen it. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes, but you can't get that copy back. If today's missing conversation never showed in the sidebar even while it was open, this is why. The only fix is for next time: save a temporary chat before you leave it.

3. Another account or workspace

If you use ChatGPT through work or school, your account has a personal workspace and a Business, Enterprise or Edu one, each with its own chats; OpenAI's help centre says the personal data stays separate and you switch from the profile menu. "Chats disappeared after logging in" is very often the browser landing in the other workspace. If you've signed up more than once, you may also have two accounts with two histories. Check the email and workspace under your profile picture.

One case is worse: a personal workspace merged into a Business one. OpenAI's help page says migrated chats can take up to about 24 hours to appear and that some may not be retrievable after a merge. In June 2026 a user lost months of chats this way and OpenAI Support took it to a support case. If this is you, go straight to the support section below.

4. The sidebar didn't load them

This is where most 2026 reports end up: the chats are intact and the list on the left failed to show them. Three versions:

A fourth, older version: in August 2025 several people saw chats vanish from the sidebar right after moving them into Projects, while search found them. If chats went missing after you reorganised, try the other Organize chats setting (one list, or grouped by project).

5. Search finds what the sidebar won't

Click the magnifying glass in the sidebar, or press Ctrl K (Cmd K on a Mac). OpenAI's help page says search matches titles and content, works best with exact words, includes archived chats, and doesn't return deleted ones. That last point makes it the test: a chat search can find exists, wherever the sidebar is hiding it.

Search for a distinctive word you'd have typed, a product name, a person, a phrase, rather than the topic. If the chat opens, it's safe; unarchive it, unpin it or move it out of a Project from there. Its link in your browser history still works too.

Two kinds of chat stay out of search on purpose. A chat you locked (⋯ › Lock chat, rolling out through 2026) is hidden from regular history, pinned chats and regular search; OpenAI's help page says to open Projects › Locked chats and enter your account PIN, and warns that resetting a forgotten PIN deletes every locked chat for good. And a conversation ChatGPT ended for safety reasons is no longer available in your visible chat history, which OpenAI treats as a separate case from anything you deleted or archived yourself.

See the whole list with dates

Search needs you to remember something about the chat. If what you want is the full list, to find the oldest chats or count them, the sidebar won't give you that: no dates, no total, and it stops loading when it feels like it.

Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension for deleting chats in bulk, and it's also the quickest way I know to see the whole list. It asks ChatGPT for the same chat list the sidebar uses, 100 at a time until the server says there are no more, and shows every chat with its last-updated date and a search box for titles. No limits, no sign-in, runs only in your browser.

Open chatgpt.com, click its toolbar icon (or press Alt Shift D) and wait while the count climbs. When it stops, every active chat is there, newest first; type a word from the title to find one, or scroll to the bottom for the oldest. Nothing changes unless you tick chats and confirm. Two limits: it lists active chats, not archived ones, and chats inside Projects may appear without their Project's name. If ChatGPT is rate-limiting the list request, the panel retries a few times, then says it couldn't load and shows the error code, which at least settles whether the list itself is blocked.

Really gone: what OpenAI can and can't do

If the chat isn't in search, isn't archived or locked, isn't in another workspace, and the sidebar looks the same after a refresh and a sign-out, deletion is the likeliest explanation, but not yet a proven one. OpenAI's own checklist for missing chats adds two steps before that conclusion: check OpenAI Status for an active incident, and request a data export to see what is still associated with the account. Once those come back empty, OpenAI's help centre says a deleted chat is removed from your account at once and permanently deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, apart from narrow security and legal exceptions, and can't be restored by you or by Support. The same goes for everything removed by Delete all chats, which takes archived and Project chats as well; the forum has collected surprised reports about that since 2024.

FAQ

Why did my ChatGPT chats disappear after logging in?

Usually because you landed in a different account or workspace than last time, or the sidebar list didn't load. Check the email and workspace under your profile picture, then search for a chat title. If search finds it, only the sidebar is misbehaving.

Are my chats deleted if the sidebar says "Unable to load history"?

No. In the autumn 2026 forum threads about that message, the affected users could still open older chats through search, and OpenAI Support said to keep using search while they looked into it. It's a loading problem, not a deletion.

Where did my pinned chats go?

Look for a collapsed Pinned section at the top of the sidebar. In March 2026 pinned chats stopped rendering on the web while they still existed; searching for the chat, opening it and unpinning it brought it back. In August 2026 a report described pinning one chat hiding unrelated recent chats, which unpinning also fixed.

Can I recover deleted ChatGPT chats?

No. OpenAI's help centre says a deleted chat can't be restored by you or by Support, and it drops out of search; a stale result may linger briefly, but opening it doesn't bring the chat back. The only copies that survive are an export you made earlier, or the chat still open in a tab or app that hasn't refreshed.
