ChatGPT says memory is full: what it means and how to fix it
Updated 5 November 2026
ChatGPT says its memory is full. You delete a few chats and nothing changes, because the notice isn't about your chats. Here's what it refers to, a two-minute fix, what to do when it stays full, and how memory and chat history relate.
What "memory full" actually refers to
ChatGPT uses the word memory for three things. Only one of them fills up.
- Saved memories. The list of facts ChatGPT has noted about you ("prefers metric units"). It has a cap; OpenAI hasn't published the number. At the cap, the notice people quote in OpenAI's forum reads "Memory is full. New memories won't be created. You can forget existing memories to make space." This list is what the notice is about.
- The memory summary. Since June 2026 OpenAI has been rolling out a new memory system, first to Plus and Pro in the US, then to other countries and to Free and Go. Instead of a list, ChatGPT keeps a summary of what it knows about you and updates it by itself from your chat history. OpenAI's pages don't describe a "full" state for it. The old list is still there behind a Saved memories link under the summary.
- "Chat memory full" inside one conversation. This is about how much of the current chat ChatGPT can still use. OpenAI's free-tier FAQ says the limit applies to that one conversation and you don't need to turn off Memory, delete saved memories or clear other chats. Start a new chat; the slow-ChatGPT guide shows how to carry the context over.
None of the three is your chat list. Deleting chats doesn't free memory.
Free up space in two minutes
- Profile picture › Settings › Personalization › Memory. If the page shows a summary, click the Saved memories link under it to reach the list. On older accounts the list is behind Manage memories.
- The ⋯ menu next to a memory has Delete; the ⋯ menu next to the search bar has Delete all.
- Go for the longest entries first, then duplicates and details from finished projects. Keep the short, stable facts.
- On Plus or Pro on the web, turn on automatic memory management. OpenAI added it in October 2025 to keep the most relevant memories prioritized and move the rest to the background, ranked by recency and how often the topic comes up; it "helps avoid memory full state". Background memories show in grey, and you can prioritize or deprioritize any entry yourself.
Still full after deleting?
Two cases keep coming up in OpenAI's forum.
One huge entry. A user in April 2025 had memory stuck at full for over a month: deleting entries freed nothing and new memories wouldn't save. The cause was a single very long memory: "there was one GIANT memory taking up so much space that even deleting others didn't make enough room". Deleting that one entry finally made room. So look for an entry that runs several lines, copy it if you want it, and delete it.
No warning, and entries that never saved. A Plus user reported in February 2025 that ChatGPT confirmed new entries as remembered while they were never stored, with no notice that the list was full. OpenAI Support replied in September 2026: review your entries under Settings › Personalization › Memory; removing and re-adding an affected entry has helped some people, though "this isn't an official fix", so copy the entry first; if it carries on, contact support through help.openai.com.
If your account offers the improved memory, that's the other way out: the summary updates itself, and no full state is documented for it. Switching between the two doesn't touch your chats.
Memory vs chat history: what deleting a chat does
Chats and memories are stored separately. Each action touches one of them.
| You do this | Saved memories | The chat |
|---|---|---|
| Delete a chat | Stay. OpenAI: deleting the chat "does not automatically delete a separate saved memory" | Gone, removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days |
| Delete a memory | Gone | Stays, mentions and all. OpenAI: deleting a memory "does not remove mentions of that information from past conversations" |
| Archive a chat | Stay | Stays in your account, still searchable |
| Delete all chats | Stay | All gone, including archived and Project chats |
So if you want ChatGPT to forget something, do both: delete the memory, and delete the chat where you first said it. ChatGPT archive vs delete has the short version; this is the long one.
Stop old chats feeding memory
Past chats reach ChatGPT's answers in two ways. Reference chat history, a switch on the Memory page, lets it draw on your past conversations. The improved memory curates its summary in the background from the same history. Both use whatever is still there, which is how last year's project resurfaces in an answer today. OpenAI's June 2026 notes put it plainly: if memory is turned back on, ChatGPT "may create new memories from chats that remain in your chat history".
Three ways to stop that:
- Turn off Reference chat history. OpenAI says what ChatGPT remembered from past chats is then deleted from its systems within 30 days. The chats themselves stay. Turning off Reference saved memories turns this off too.
- Check the sources. ChatGPT can show which past chats, saved memories or custom instructions shaped a reply, and from there you can delete the chat it came from or mark it as not relevant.
- Delete the old chats. Export first (Settings › Data controls › Export data). Then Delete all chats in the same place, which is all-or-nothing, or delete chats one at a time from the ⋯ menu, slowly: a burst of deletes trips ChatGPT's "too many requests" block.
Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension for the in-between case. It lists every chat with its last-updated date, newest first, so the old ones sit together at the bottom. Search or shift-click to tick the ones you're done with, then delete or archive them in one go. It paces the requests and retries if ChatGPT asks it to slow down. No limits, no sign-in, runs only in your browser.
Archive if you might want a chat back, but for memory it isn't the same as deleting: the chat is still in your account. More in how to delete multiple ChatGPT chats at once.
Turn memory off without losing your chats
None of these touches your chats.
- Saved memories list: Settings › Personalization › Memory, switch off Reference saved memories. OpenAI says this doesn't delete the memories, so you can switch it back on later. It also turns off Reference chat history.
- Memory summary: the ⋯ menu on the summary page has Delete and turn off memory (added 12 June 2026). It deletes what the summary shows and turns Memory off. OpenAI: "It does not delete past chats."
- For one conversation: use a Temporary chat and choose Unpersonalized before your first message. OpenAI's memory page says a temporary chat can use your existing memories and custom instructions if you leave it personalized, that the choice can't be changed once the chat starts, and that it never creates or updates memories either way. It doesn't appear in your history unless you save it.
Export your data before deleting anything. There's no undo for a deleted chat or memory.
FAQ
Does Plus or Pro get more memory?
Yes. OpenAI's June 2026 release notes say Plus and Pro users get twice as much memory capacity with the improved memory system, and automatic management of saved memories is only offered to Plus and Pro on the web. OpenAI hasn't published a number for any plan.
Does deleting all chats clear memory?
No. Saved memories live separately from your chats and stay when the chats go. Deleting chats only removes the conversations that chat-history memory draws on. To clear memory itself, delete the entries on the Memory page, or use Delete and turn off memory on the summary.
Why did a deleted memory come back?
Because the fact is still in a chat. Deleting a memory doesn't remove mentions of it from past chats, and OpenAI says that with memory on, ChatGPT may create new memories from chats that remain in your history. Delete the chat where you said it as well as the memory.
Does archiving a chat remove it from memory?
Don't count on it. An archived chat is still in your account and still searchable, and OpenAI's checklist for fully removing a remembered detail includes archived chats. If you want a chat out of reach, delete it.
