ChatGPT "Too many requests" when deleting chats
Updated 5 November 2026
You start clearing out old chats, delete a dozen or so in a row, and ChatGPT stops you:
Too many requests: You're making requests too quickly. We've temporarily limited access to your conversations to protect your data. Please wait a few minutes before trying again.
Nothing is wrong with your account. Here's what's going on and how to get your cleanup done anyway.
Why it happens
Every delete is a request to ChatGPT's servers, and so is the sidebar refreshing after each one. Delete quickly and you send a burst of requests in a few seconds. ChatGPT treats bursts like that as possible abuse and pauses access to your conversations for a short while. People report hitting it after anywhere from a handful to a few dozen quick deletes.
What to do when you see it
- Stop and wait a few minutes. The block lifts on its own. Retrying immediately tends to extend it.
- Use one tab. ChatGPT open in several tabs or windows keeps sending requests in the background.
- Don't reload over and over. Each reload is more requests.
- Then go slower. A few seconds between deletes is usually enough to stay under the limit.
It's a temporary limit on your conversation history, not a ban. Your chats are still there.
Clearing many chats without hitting it
If you want everything gone, use Settings › Data controls › Delete all chats. It's one request, so no rate limit, but it also removes archived chats and chats inside Projects, and there's no undo.
If you only want some chats gone, the trick is pacing: one delete at a time, with a pause between them, and a longer pause if ChatGPT asks you to slow down.
Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension that does the pacing for you. Tick the chats you want gone, click Delete, and it works through them one at a time, about one a second. If ChatGPT still says "slow down", it pauses with a countdown, then carries on more slowly. A rate limit never counts as a failed delete. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
Does deleting chats make ChatGPT faster?
Not much. A shorter sidebar loads a little quicker; a sluggish conversation is slow because of its own length, and only a new chat fixes that. The full answer is in does having too many ChatGPT chats slow it down?.
FAQ
How long does the block last?
Usually a few minutes. If it keeps coming back, wait longer before you start again and go slower.
Will my account get flagged?
The message is a short, automatic rate limit. Waiting it out is the expected response.
Is it the same as the "too many requests in 1 hour" message?
No. That one is about how many messages you've sent to the model on your plan. This one is about requests to your chat history.
