How to delete all ChatGPT chats except Projects and pinned chats
Updated 6 November 2026
You've organised the chats that matter into Projects, pinned a few you use every day, and want the other few hundred gone. The obvious button, Settings › Data controls › Delete all chats, is the wrong one: it deletes chats inside Projects too, and archived chats, with no undo.
What ChatGPT offers on its own
- Delete all chats: everything, including Project and archived chats.
- Archive all chats: hides everything from the sidebar, deletes nothing. Project chats stay in their Projects.
- One at a time: the ⋯ menu on each chat. Fine for ten, painful for three hundred, and fast deleting triggers a temporary "too many requests" block.
There's no "delete everything except…" option.
Keep Projects and pinned, delete the rest
Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension for this. No limits, no sign-up, runs in your browser. Not affiliated with OpenAI.
- Open chatgpt.com and click the extension's icon. Your chats appear with checkboxes.
- Skip chats in Projects and Skip pinned chats are on by default, so those never appear in the list and can't be selected.
- Optional: pick "Older than 90 days" to keep anything recent.
- Click Select all, check the count, then Delete. It works through them one at a time and pauses if ChatGPT asks it to slow down.
Not sure? Use Archive instead of Delete first. You can restore archived chats any time.
FAQ
Can I delete the chats inside one Project only?
Yes. Untick "Skip chats in Projects" and each Project's chats appear under its name with its own select box.
Does this delete the Project itself?
No. Projects, their files and instructions stay; only the chats you select are deleted.
