How to find old ChatGPT chats by date

Updated 6 November 2026

You know roughly when you had the chat. ChatGPT won't tell you. The sidebar has no sort by date, no date filter and no date next to each chat, and in September 2026 OpenAI Support confirmed that the built-in controls don't cover sorting or batch actions. Here's what does work, from quick to thorough.

Why the sidebar order confuses people

Search for what you remember

The search at the top of the sidebar is the quickest route, and it's on every plan on the web and in the apps. It can return chats, Projects, images and documents; pick the Chats filter to keep it to conversations. Archived chats show up in results. Deleted ones don't.

People on OpenAI's forum report search sometimes skipping months of history. If it turns up nothing for a chat you're sure about, go to the export.

Jump by month with the export

The export is the only place you get true creation dates. Settings › Data controls › Export data. OpenAI emails you a link; its help centre says the export can take up to 7 days to arrive and the link expires 24 hours after you receive it, so download it as soon as it lands.

The zip holds two useful files. chat.html opens in a browser with every conversation in full, so Find (Ctrl F or ⌘ F) works across all of them at once. conversations.json is the same data for programs: each conversation carries a title, a create_time and an update_time, as Unix timestamps (seconds since 1 January 1970). If you're comfortable with a short script or a spreadsheet, sort by create_time and you have your whole history in the order you started it. In Google Sheets, =A1/86400+DATE(1970,1,1) turns a timestamp in A1 into a date once you format the cell as one.

Two caveats. The export only has the chats that exist when you request it, so anything deleted earlier is gone for good. And it's a snapshot: chats from after the export aren't in it.

See every chat with its date in one list

If you'd rather look than export, you need something that lists all your chats on one page with a date beside each. ChatGPT doesn't have that view.

Disclosure: I made Bulk Delete Chats, a free Chrome extension built for deleting and archiving chats in bulk. Its panel is also the simplest way I know to see your whole history at once: every chat with its last-updated date, a search box, and a filter for chats older than 30 days, 90 days or a year, or before a date you pick. No limits, no sign-in, runs only in your browser.

  1. Install it from the Chrome Web Store, open chatgpt.com and click its toolbar icon (or press Alt Shift D).
  2. Wait for the list to load. Every chat in your account is there with its last-updated date, newest first.
  3. Narrow it down: pick Older than 30 days, 90 days or 1 year, or Before a date… and choose a day. Type a word in the search box to filter titles as well.
  4. Scroll the shortened list. Nothing is changed until you tick chats and confirm a delete or archive, so it's safe to use it just to look.

Chats inside Projects are left out by default; untick Skip chats in Projects and they're listed under their Project's name. The dates are last-updated, the same thing the sidebar sorts by, not the day you started the chat. For creation dates, use the export.

Old chats not loading?

Two sidebar problems come up in OpenAI's forum, and both leave your chats intact.

Either way, search still finds the chats, and the export contains all of them.

Then: archive or delete what you no longer need

The less there is, the easier the next search. Once you've found what you were after, rename it or pin it so it stays easy to reach, then clear out the chats you'll never open again. Archive hides a chat but keeps it, and it still shows in search. Delete removes it for good. The differences are in ChatGPT archive vs delete, and the ways to clear many at once are in how to delete multiple ChatGPT chats at once. The same age filter above works for that: show chats older than a year, tick the ones you don't need, archive.

FAQ

Can I sort ChatGPT chats by date?

Not inside ChatGPT. The sidebar is in last-activity order with no sort or date filter, and OpenAI Support said in September 2026 that the built-in controls don't cover sorting. The export gives you creation dates; a panel like Bulk Delete Chats lists every chat with its last-updated date and filters by age.

Does replying in an old chat move it to the top?

Yes. The sidebar follows the last update, so a chat you reply to today sits with today's chats, however old it is.

Why can't I find a chat I know I had?

It may be archived (search still finds those; the list is under Settings › Data controls › Archived chats), inside a Project, in a different account or workspace, or it was a temporary chat, which is never saved. If it was deleted, including by Delete all chats, it's gone and search won't show it.

Does the export show creation dates?

Yes. Each conversation in conversations.json has a create_time and an update_time as Unix timestamps. It's the only place to get the date a chat was started; the sidebar and the extension panel go by last update.
